March 18 deadline to apply for General Secretary position of General Board of Church & Society

WASHINGTON, D.C. — March 18 is the deadline to apply for the position of General Secretary of the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society (GBCS). The General Secretary serves as the chief executive officer of the agency and is responsible for coordination of the total program of the board, supervision of staff, and administration of the headquarters office on Capitol Hill here.

The General Board of Church & Society is one of four international general program boards of The United Methodist Church. GBCS’s prime responsibility is to seek implementation of the Social Principles and other policy statements on Christian social concerns of the General Conference, the denomination’s highest policy-making body.

GBCS’s primary areas of ministry are Advocacy, Education & Leadership Formation, United Nations & International Affairs, and resourcing these areas for the denomination. It has offices on Capitol Hill and at the Church Center for the United Nations in New York City.

The General Secretary is expected to provide leadership in GBCS’s prophetic and visionary role as the denomination’s social justice advocate.

The General Secretary will work out of the agency’s offices in the United Methodist Building, which faces the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court.

Applicant qualifications

To apply, an applicant must be a professing member of The United Methodist Church with biblical and theological understanding of its mission and social witness. A thorough knowledge of the structure, operational style, polity and doctrines of the denomination is necessary.

Applicants must be articulate in expressing the mandates of the church and justice issues. They must demonstrate an ability to work effectively with Annual, Jurisdictional and Central Conferences to coordinate, develop and implement the board’s comprehensive U.S. and international ministry.

Candidates must have the ability to lead and supervise a diverse staff, work collaboratively with a multi-ethnic Board of Directors, United Methodist boards and agencies, and ecumenical groups.

Broad experience in budget management and fund raising are necessary. Master’s degree is required, but a PhD is preferred.

Salary is negotiable, based on the the General Church factoring scale established by the General Council on Finance & Administration.
